How Does Egg Freezing Work?

Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your journey begins with a comprehensive fertility assessment, including hormone testing and an ultrasound scan to evaluate your ovarian reserve. This helps us understand how your body may respond to treatment and allows us to create a personalised plan.

Ovarian Stimulation

You will take hormonal medication for approximately 10–14 days to encourage your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. During this time, you will be closely monitored with scans and blood tests to ensure everything is progressing safely and effectively.

Egg Retrieval

Egg collection is a short, minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, the eggs are gently retrieved from the ovaries. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a day.

Is Egg Freezing Right for You?

Under Maltese law, ovarian stimulation cycles for fertility preservation can be carried out until a woman reaches the age of 46. However, it is strongly advisable to consider egg freezing at a younger age, ideally in the late 20s to early 30s, when egg number and quality are typically at their healthiest.

While treatment is legally permitted up to age 46, the success of egg freezing largely depends on the age at which the eggs are retrieved. Freezing eggs earlier generally increases the likelihood of achieving a successful pregnancy in the future.
